Cardiac rehab

If you've had a heart problem or heart surgery, you may be focused on getting back to your regular activities and improving your heart health. At Iredell Health System, our medically supervised cardiac rehabilitation program can help you do those things safely.

Our cardiopulmonary rehab team will work closely with you and your physician to tailor cardiac rehab therapy to your individual needs. Your rehab team may include physicians, registered nurses, a vocational rehabilitation counselor, a clinical exercise physiologist, a dietician, a licensed counselor and others. They'll keep your personal physician informed of your progress through regular reports, including vital signs, symptoms and exercise responses.

How can cardiac rehab help you?

Cardiac rehab has many benefits. For instance, it can:

  • Decrease your chances of having another heart attack or cardiovascular event by improving heart disease risk factors.
  • Improve how your heart and lungs work through a customized exercise program.
  • Show you how to increase physical activity safely and effectively.
  • Teach you and your family about heart disease, treatments, medications and risk factors.
  • Help you recognize heart disease signs and symptoms and know when to seek medical treatment.
  • Decrease anxiety, fear and depression through counseling and group support.
  • Help you return to work.

Who can participate in cardiac rehab?

You may be a candidate for cardiac rehab if you've been diagnosed with heart attack, congestive heart failure or stable angina. You may also be a candidate if you've had a heart procedure, such as angioplasty and/or coronary stent placement, coronary artery bypass surgery, heart transplant, or a valve replacement or repair.

What happens in cardiac rehab?

Your rehab therapy will address all the aspects of your life that affected by heart disease.

Cardiac rehab includes:

Exercise that is good for your heart and lungs. Our gym is equipped with treadmills, upper-body cycles, stationary bikes, rowing machines and recumbent bikes. Your exercise is medically supervised. Continuous telemetry monitoring during each fitness session also helps ensure your safety.

Heart-healthy education. You and your family will receive information about exercise, nutrition, medications, heart anatomy and stress.

Nutrition consultation. You'll learn to eat well, which can help with managing weight and improving blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

Stress management and mental health support. You will learn techniques to address stress and receive a consultation to assist in managing anxiety, fear and depression.
