Minimally invasive spine surgery (MIS)

Minimally invasive spine procedures are faster, result in less pain, have smaller scars, and reduce the recovery time needed following most surgeries. Compared to regular, "open" surgical procedures, minimally invasive ones cause much less trauma to the muscles and soft tissues, and have less of a chance of infection.

Conditions we can treat using MIS operations:

  • Degenerative disc disease.
  • Lumbar spinal stenosis.
  • Herniated discs.
  • Spinal deformities, including scoliosis.
  • Spinal tumors.
  • Spinal infections and instability.

Complex spinal reconstruction

In certain cases, patients will require more complex spinal surgery. Our Iredell County health professionals offer complex spinal reconstruction for those patients who need cervical disc replacement, posterior cervical fusion, thoracic instrumentation, lumbar laminectomy, and many other complicated procedures. We implement state-of-the-art equipment such as the intraoperative CT scanner with computer navigation and utilize the latest advancements in spine surgery to ensure our patients get an optimal level of care.

Artificial disc replacement

For some patients suffering from cervical disc problems, artificial disc replacement may be an option. We utilize the Medtronic Prestige® Cervical Disc, which is a titanium prosthetic device. It has been carefully designed to help you maintain motion in your neck. This is an extremely innovative device that allows for mobility and motion that simply wasn't possible with previous methods.

Spinal cord stimulators (SCS) for chronic pain

Patients who suffer from chronic pain in their neck, lower back, arms or legs may be good candidates for treatment from a spinal cord stimulator. At Iredell NeuroSpine Center, we use Precision Spectra with SmoothWave Technology by Boston Scientific Systems. This innovative technology utilizes more than 30 independently programmed power sources designed to tailor stimulation to target your unique health needs.

How a SCS works

Pain is carried through electrical nerve impulses along a person's spinal cord and all the way to the brain. A SCS works through implanting a small pulse generator and insulated wires into your body. Once installed, an external remote control can be used to send electrical impulses to help mask the pain signals traveling to your brain.

Peripheral nerve decompression

At Iredell NeuroSpine Center, we offer care and treatment for a variety of disorders resulting from nerve compression. When a nerve is compressed, it can cause symptoms of pain, numbness or weakness. For instance, when the nerves in the wrist and hand are compressed, it leads to carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). There are conservative treatments for CTS that can be very effective, avoiding surgery. In some cases, surgery may be necessary after conservative measures fail. In those instances, the surgery is a brief same-day procedure, and we focus on getting the patient back to their daily activities as soon as possible.
