Whether your goal is to get back to living your best after an injury or to maintain your communication skills in the wake of a Parkinson’s diagnosis, you don’t have to travel far for expert care. Iredell Health System provides physical, occupational and speech therapy services to people ages 6 years and older at convenient locations in Mooresville, Statesville and Taylorsville. If appropriate, rehabilitation services can also be provided in the home through Iredell Home Health.

If you have an accident, illness or other health problem that makes everyday activities difficult, occupational therapists are here to help. Do you know all the ways these specialists can help you live independently?

True or false: Occupational therapy is only appropriate for people with severe, permanent disabilities.

False. This therapy can help people facing a wide range of health challenges. It can, for example, help people with wrist injuries return to their jobs and hobbies. It may help those with arthritis protect their joints by performing tasks differently. And it can help stroke survivors learn new ways to do daily tasks, like dressing and cooking.

True or false: Occupational therapy is most helpful for older adults.

False. Occupational therapists can help children with trouble concentrating succeed in school. They can help youngsters with autism learn to socialize. And they can help kids who use wheelchairs play with peers. They can even help babies and toddlers meet developmental milestones if they're at risk for delays.

True. Occupational therapists may suggest adaptive devices—such as wheelchairs, leg braces or eating aids—to help people be more independent. They can also help people modify their homes or workplaces to accommodate their needs and restrictions.

When you need a rehabilitation specialist

Our experienced physical, occupational and speech therapists work with inpatients and outpatients to help them recover from issues like an accident, surgical procedure, disease process, illness or birth defect.

Starting with your first visit, our therapists will listen to you to understand your personal recovery goals. Then they will provide an individualized treatment plan to help you achieve those outcomes. Your therapist won’t simply show you exercises to do in our gym. You will receive one-on-one therapy using the latest techniques.

Some of the rehab services we offer include:

Physical and occupational therapy treatments, such as instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization, manual therapy, trigger point release, customized splinting for the hand and wrist, balance training, and vestibular and vertigo rehabilitation.

We have a certified hand therapist as well as providers who are certified in dry needling.

Speech therapy treatments. Concerns that our speech-language pathologists can help with include clear articulation, understanding and using language, word finding, improving cognitive skills (memory, problem solving and organization), verbal fluency in conversation, and alternative and augmented communication training.

Our team includes therapists certified in VitalStim therapy for swallowing and LSVT Big and SPEAK OUT therapy to help people with Parkinson’s disease improve their speech and swallowing.
